Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Technological development and legislation go together in ensuring that the vehicle operator can have a safe, reliable braking system. It is unfortunate that so much of this effort can be eventually wasted by failing to maintain the system in line with makers' recommendations.

This may be the result of lack of knowledge or simply be due to malpractice; either way, the operator will eventually suffer. To help preserve the initial high standard, schedule servicing is essential using the following guidelines: 0 Carry out regular checks on lining material thickness.

0 Always use the lining material grade • recommended by the manufacturer. 0 Ensure the regular overhaul and replacement of hydraulic units. 0 Change hydraulic brake fluid, (Crimson for drum brakes every 18 months) (Castro] Girling Universal Fluid — for disc brake systems — every two years).

E Fit new shoe return springs at each lining change; they play an important part in auto adjuster operation.

• Always check drum conditions. Any drum skimming should be strictly to manufacturer's limits.

O Examine the vehicle for steering and suspension wear, chassis damage and tyre defects.

O Lubricate metal to metal contact surfaces with the approved brake grease. These points will pay dividends.
