Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Traffic Congestion

Ian Fowler's "Sound Off" (CM 9-15 Oct), prompts me to reply: The iniquitous 90km/h (soon to be 80km/h) limit was imposed by Brussels on the spurious grounds that great fuel savings would ensue. This has proved not to be the case.

This policy was implemented rather than taking the much less popular measure needed—to curb burgeoning use of cars, the real cause of congestion. It is inevitable that Fowler, and many others who do not have to travel at a soul-destroying 56mph, think that this is such a great idea for the rest of us.

While speeds of 75mph must be condemned, the consensus among those I talk to is that 100km/h (62mph) would be a realistic speed.

Perhaps less congestion would be caused, and less fuel used, if Mr Fowler and his ilk did not commute such long distances in their company cars.

Or is this too much to ask? Name and address supplied.
