Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

J EFERRING to your leader, "Glasshouse Dwellers," I‘of May 6, whilst your comments upon, and criticisms of, the attitude of operatives may appear to be justified, it is to be regretted that although your observations will • be read mainly by managements, it is doubtful whether the latter will read views on „the same subjects if published in journals sponsored by operatives.

It is considered that the pith of your article is in the suggestion that representatives of the rank and file also attend conferences such as that held in Bournemouth, but here the operative word is " invited."

The writer has very encouraging recollections of " sitting-in " at a session of what appeared to be a very successful joint consultative committee, and was quite surprised at the information, including figures, which was put over by the management to the operatives' representatives. It is suggested, however, that the real success of such conferences depends upon the proper information filtering from the representatives right down to the rank and file.

Reverting to your suggestion, may it be taken that you actually invited the view of operatives' organizations with the object of publishing these alongside your own criticisms?

It is submitted that this matter has little to do with party politics. Similar differences occur in all types of undertaking, including those "nationalized" and those municipally operated.

West Bridgford, Notts. L. DONSON HOLMES.
