Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE refusal of the West Midland Licensing Authority to agree to modifications asked for by a Wolverhampton operator seemed "unfathomable," it was stated at an appeal hearing in Birmingham on Monday.

Don Everall, Ltd., appealed against the Authority's refusal to grant them an extension of their express service between Walsall and Ifracombe to June and September, and for additional vehicles with picking-up points at Wednesbury and Dudley.

Mr. K. Mynett, for the appellants, claimed that the application was "entirely justified." There was little reason for making people from Wednesbury and Dudley travel to one of the starting points.

Mr. Mynett said it appeared that the British public were put to the maximum of inconvenience.

GEN. FRANCO SEES LAND-ROVER OILER

VVHILE passing through Spain, a Land-Rover incorporating a Turner oil engine was demonstrated to General Franco on his farm near Madrid. There is a campaign in Spain to convert to oil-engined vehicles because petrol is four times as expensive as oil fuel.

The Land-Rover was en route for Africa on a 5,000-mile run across difficult country to prove the reliability of the Turner engine. The journey was

completed satisfactorily despite extremes of temperature and various hazards, including tine sand which reduced visibility to a few feet.

FURTHER CALL FOR TAX CUT

DEMANDS for a reduction in the fuel tax, an extended roads programme and the abolition of purchase tax on vehicles have been made by the standing joint committee of the motoring organizations in a statement of policy sent to all Parliamentary candidates.

It was stated that when, in 1952, 71d. was added to the fuel tax, the reason given was that there was a need to reduce consumption as a countermeasure to the unexpected dollar expenditure resulting from the Abadan crisis. This trend, said the committee, has since been corrected by the expansion of this country's oil-refining industry.

Another demand is for a £10 annual tax for private cars.
