-THE constant rattle set up by loose window fittings on enclosed passenger vehicles such as saloon buses is often a source of much irritation to the occupants, and, although much attention has been directed to the use of means for overcoming the trouble, it is still far too prevalent: There are certain types of window available in which it is most difficult fur, rattle to be set up, but in some of these designs continuous attention is necessary to the means which are provided for the prevention of the in

Mr. H: S. Skenfield;of 67, Fish Ponds Road, Bristol; has, in•company with Mr! B. J. Webber and Mr.' S. E. Smith, designed a window-sash ezrangement in which this difficulty is overcome. In this design the weight of the window is balanced by an.elastic.cord; which tends to keep the window closed, and which is so arranged that, as the window is opened, its tension is increased. In the ,back of the grooves in which the window

frame slides is a number of recessed plates, designed to accommodate springpressed balls which are located in recesses in the window frame, and spaced to correspond with the plates in the grooves. The window may be opened to a yarying degree, dependent upon the

• number of these balls, and the effect of the resilient action of the elastic cord, combined with the 'tendency of 'the. springs to press the. halls closely into their respective recesses-, is to hold the window firmly in it frame and thus prevent rattle.

ASIMPLE form of automatically locking door control, suitable for various purposes, but mainly of interest in connection with pay-as-you-enter buses, has been invented by London Lorries, Ltd., of Spring Place, Kentish .Tewn; London, IsT.W.5. A long, slotted, horizontal bracket or shelf is fitted to the interior of the bus. In the slot a short bar is guided-by means of pins and

rollers. One end of the bar is attached to a handle, as shown in our illustration, and the other is coupled to the door.'

To ensure that the door cannot be opened from outside, the control handle is fitted with trigger and pawl geara.The pawl engages in holes or notches at each end of the slot, thus locking the door in its extreme positions. It is necessary to operate the trigger gear before the door can he moved.. To prevent the door being accidentally closed against the driver while he is out of the .bus, a swivelling plate is provided, which can be made to slip under the -pawl and prevent its engagement with the notches.

The United Automobile Services, Ltd., have given an assurance to the Lowestoft Licensing Committee that all buses which are fitted with front-entrance pas . senger dears will also be provided with emergency exits at the rear.

Traffic revenue from the Plymouth Corporation tramways for the year ended March 31st last totalled £206,029 and from the motorbuses £23,634. After paying. the sinking fund charges and interest out of the gross profits there remains a net surplus of £10,712 oe the tramways and £1,703 on the buses.
