THE 1985 Scottish Motor Show could be the biggest ever, if a new Scottish national exhibition centre for Glasgow is opened in time.

The Government has given its provisional approval to a scheme for a £30m, 20,000sqm exhibition centre to be built on reclaimed land at the Queen's Dock, a short distance from the Kelvin Hall, in Glasgow. The aim is for the centre to be opened by Christmas 1984.

A spokesman for the Scottish Motor Trade Association told CM that the new centre, which will have three times the floor space of the Kelvin Hall and will be divided into five separate halls, will enable it to stage the standard and size of commercial vehicle show which the industry has sought for years.

He did warn that admission charges to the new centre will have to be higher than those to the Kelvin Hall, which is a particularly low-cost building, but said he hoped that the centre would phase in its realistic charges over a period.

The SMTA also is keen that more parking space should be available at the new centre, which will be built alongside the presently under-used Finnieston suburban railway station on a line into Glasgow Central.
