• Improved maintenance is needed to prevent lorry wheels coming off, then Transport Minister Peter Bottomley said last week. He was asked by Tory MP Roger King what action was being taken following talks with the Institute of Road Transport Engineers on wheel loss from trucks.
"The principal reason for HGV wheel detachment is in effective maintenance," said Bottomley. "We support the initiative taken by the 1RTE to remedy this, including advice to operators." 0 Research into wheel and fixing design has been shelved because of a cash shortage, says Don Wright, chairman of the British Standards Tyres and Wheels technical committee (CM 6-12 July).
