Rapid Progress Shown at Annual Meeting. Well-known Personalities as Guests EXCELLENT progress was shown to have been made, at the annual meeting, held last week, of the Northern Road Transport Owners Association, Ltd., Newcastle. The report of the secretary, Mr. W. C. Percival, J.P., stated that the membership now numbered 103, as compared with 98 last year, 18 new members having been enrolled during the past year to take the places of 13 who had left.

During the past year, a large number of meetings has been held, and, in connection with conferences of groups of members affected by a common problem, joint action has made it possible for members of the Association considerably to reduce legal costs. Action has also been taken at Newcastle and Hexham, in connection with busstation disputes.

The secretary stated that the timetable sub-committee had now reached a stage in its labours when an Association time schedule showed prospects of being an accomplished fact.

He stated that the Traffic Commissioners had invited the co-operation of the Association, whilst the chairman of the N.R.T.O.A., Mr. J. S. Berry, had been appointed chairman of the Regional Fares Committee.

Towards the close of the past year, an arrangement was made for insurance on a fleet basis, as a result of which members will effect an economy that will more than meet the annual subscription to the Association's funds. During the year, the N.R.T.O.A. became affiliated to the Motor Hirers and Coach Services Association, Ltd.

Messrs. J. J. Berry, R. Longstaff, R. Robson and T: Wilkinson were reelected as members of the council.

The meeting was followed by the annual supper of the Association, guests including Sir John Maxwel , C.M.G. (chairman of the Northern Traffic Commissioners) ; Messrs. C. A . Campbell (clerk to the Commissioners) ; L_ H. Challis (certifying officer) ; A. T. Evans (United Automobile Services,

Ltd.) ; H. A. Stagg (Northern General Transport Co., Ltd.) ; T. P. Easton and R. W. Lee (Newcastle Corporation) ; and F. A. Flin (M.H.C.S.A.).

Moving the toast of "The Ministry of Transport:: Mr. Berry remarked that operators should not be expected further to co-ordinate until the Ministry performed a little co-ordination on its own account. Sir John Maxwell, in replying, said that the numerous applications before him for increased fares are receiving serious consideration.

Mr. Percival moved the toast of "The Guests," and Mr. W. McKeag, M.P., and Mr. J. Magnay, M.P., replied.

In moving the toast of "The Association," Mr. Film mentioned the attitude of the Commissioners towards railway representations and stressed the point that the period of the currency of roadservice licences should be three years, instead of a year. Another matter with which he dealt was the difference of opinion between the Association, the Ministry and the Commissioners en sections 72 and 74 of the Act.
