THIRTY Mercedes-Benz 1626 tractive units are to be supplied by Spa rshatts of Kent Ltd to Car Transport Ltd. The vehicles are to replace similar units which the operator introduced about two years ago on a maintenance contract with Sparshatts and which were expected to stay in service until 1982.
In a carefully prepared costing exercise it was found that replacement now would result in considerable savings (in 1981 maintenance for the 30-strong fleet should cost E28,000 a year less by buying now).
The new vehicles will have a special cab-roof conversion to provide more clearance for the transporter front overhang and will be on 11 x 22.5 Michelin tyre equipment to reduce overall height. Geosource Incorporated of Houston, Texas, which is engaged in the supply of specialised equipment to the oil industry, will initially be responsible for the sales of RollsRoyce diesel engines in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.
