AS the outcome of a prolonged discussion between Mr. J. L. Kinder, assistant director, Associated Road Operators, and the Ministry of Labour, with regard to the position, of drivers who may be liable to be called up for military service, Mr. Kinder has now been informed that, if a man changes his occupation he should notify the local office of the Ministry of Labour and National Service. If the change be only temporary, and the man has, for a short period, entered some other job, he is not regarded as having changed his occupation.

If the driver of a vehicle below 21 tons unladen weight ceased to drive such a machine, and took to driving a vehicle exceeding 2i tons, he should, unless the change be purely temporary, inform the local officer of the position, in order that be may be registered in the new occupation -which, as is generally known, would carry reservation at the age of 25 instead of 30 years. Conversely, if he ceased to be the driver of a vehicle in the heavier class, and took to driving .a machine between and 21 tons unladen weight, he would be regarded as changing his occupation from one which carried reservation at 25 to due which carried reservation at 30 years-of age.

Ln connection with the procedure to be adopted by a man changing his occupation after he had registered under the National Service (Armed Forces) Act, the proper course is for him to call at, or send in writing to, the local office of the Ministry of Labour and National Service, the address of which appears on his certificate of registration, full particulars of his new occupation, with his name, address and registration number. If the man has changed his employer, the name and address of the new employer should also be given.

His position under the Schedule of Reserved Occupations will then be determined in the light of his new occupation, but no regard can be paid to a change of occupation notified after an enlistment notice has been issued.
