Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Cohn Barnett • Eaton will be introducing its latest transmission developments at next month's Hanover Show. Star of the new range is the Eaton Fuller AutoShift 16, an automatic variant of the proven 16-speed synchromesh S-Series gearbox. The dualmode AutoShift is designed to complement the latest electronically controlled engines, and can be used in fully automatic mode (the default on start-up) or switched to semi-automatic. In either mode, the clutch is used only for stopping, starting and shunting. In semi-automatic mode the driver operates a small selector to choose a gear from an available range shown on a dashboard display.

AutoShift 16 is available on all 16-speed S-Series models with torque capacity from 1750 Nm (ATS/0-12316) to 2375 Nm KTS/0-17316). The full range of S-Series ancillaries, including PT-Os and retarders, is available. AutoShift 16 uses "fuzzy logic" to decide whether power or economy is the immediate priority.

Other changes to the range include: • An expansion of the S-Series range with the introduction of the 1,850Nm capacity RTS-15316, and the similar 2,100Nm RTS0

15316 overdrive version. This transmission fills a gap in the present line-up and has been developed to meet the requirements of MAN's new D2866LF 12-litre 403hp (301kW) engine (CM 16-22 July).

• The input torque capacity of the ATS0-12316 overdrive box has been increased from 1,750 to 1,850Nm; the direct drive RTS12316 box stays at 1,750Nm.

• The oil change interval for S-Series transmissions is being extended to 300,000km, subject

• Eaton Spicer has developed a 430mm diaphragm clutch fitted with the Solo wear adjustment system. Solo compensates for the changing position of the diaphragm spring due to wear of the friction material. This position change on a conventional diaphragm clutch alters the load characteristics over the clutch's life, causing accelerated wear of the lining. Not only is clutch life increased by the Solo system maintaining the correct loadings, but thicker facings can also be used to give further life improvements. The clutch is compatible with existing transmissions.

to the use of Eaton-approved synthetic oils.

• The new FS-10209 and FS010209 nine-speed synchromesh transmissions, with a torque capacity of 1,500Nm, extend the range of medium heavy duty units. They incorporate a new patented pyrolitic carbon friction material for the synchronisers. Eaton claims that the multimesh gearing of the front section and the epicyclic range unit eliminates the need for noise encapsulation, while the front mounted oil pump reduces overall length. The new unit can be fitted with existing single and double PTO units, as well as the Voith R115 retarder.

• Four new six-speed transmissions in the 760 to 1,165Nm range have been introduced, aimed at the US market. They are in effect single-layshaft versions of the S-Series, and include Eaton's "Low Force" synchroniser technology. There are two direct drive models, the FS-5406A and FS-6406A, and two with 018 overdrives, the FSO-6406A and FSO-8406A.
