DESPITE requests from the Licensing Authorities for more vehicle examiners to preserve vehicle safety standards, the Department of Transport says it is only recruiting them to preserve the status quo of numbers.

Six of the 11 LAs in the 11 former Traffic Areas complained that they were facing staff shortages in their most recent annual reports.

Eastern LA Ken Peter said that vehicle maintenance investigations and checks "were hampered by the endemic shortage of vehicle examiners".

But the DTp insists that despite a recruitment drive for vehicle examiners there is no major recruitment campaign.
