Mr. L. Graham, general manager, Venture Transport, Ltd., has been elected chairman of the northern section of the Institute of Transport.
Mr. T. A. Walker, Goodyear district manager, Edinburgh, since December, 1956, has been appointed manager, sales development division, operating from the Goodyear head office at Wolverhamptonk. He is succeeded as district manager, Edinburgh, by Mr. P. J. Connor, formerly general line salesman in the Scottish division.
Mr. J. G. Methven, labour relations officer with the Scottish Omnibuses has been appointed a member of the development corporation which will be responsible for the organization and building of the new town of Livingston, in the Lothians. • He was formerly organizer and chief officer of the T.G.W.U. in Scotland.
Mr. J. H. Pitchford, chairman and managing director of Ricardo and Co., Engineers (1927), Ltd., who has been elected president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in succession to Sir Kenneth Hague, is the first president to be drawn from the Automobile Division. Mr. Pitchford was educated at Brighton College and Christ's College, Cambridge, where he read engineering. After working in Mr. H. R. Ricardo's research laboratories at Shoreham, Sussex, he joined his present company in 1926. In the research and development department he became particularly identified with combustion research, notably on the high-speed diesel engine. He was appointed general manager in 1939, and more recently chairman and managing director. He is widely known as a consulting engineer in the design and development of all kinds of internal combustion engine and their applications. Mr. Pitchford joined the I.Mech.E., as an associate in 1937, became a member in 1947, and was elected in 1949 to the council of the Automobile Division, of which he became chairman in 1954. Mr. M. H. L. Whitehouse has been appointed secretary of the British Engineers' Association, He joined the staff of the association in 1949 and prior to his new appointment was head of the Technical Division.
When Mr. R. I. H. Longman, chairman and managing director of Wilts and Dorset Motor Services, Ltd., retires on June 30, Mr. D. S. Deacon, now assistant general manager and traffic manager of United Automobile Services, Ltd., will become Wilts and Dorset director and general manager. Mr. G. McKay will become chairman and Mr. T. W. H. Galley will replace Mr. M. A. Holmes on the board of directors.
ELECTIONS Mr. G. W. Mousley has been elected chairman of the West Midland Area of the Road Haulage Association. Mr. D. H. Dale and Mr. D. R. Miers have been elected vicechairmen.
