Broom of the Standard Motor Co., Ltd., who visited the Volkswagen concern in Germany, and MR. A. G. HARROWELL, of 'Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., who visited the Renault organization in France, received book awards for their essays.

MR. H. W. CROMACK, assistant divisional engineer, central road services, south-east division, London Transport Executive, has been appointed divisional engineer, country buses and coaches (north) at St. Albans. Mr. Cromack commenced an apprenticeship with the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., in 1922. MR. R. D. GILLANDERS, lately acting divisional engineer, central road services, north-east division, has been appointed administrative assistant in the office of the rolling stock engineer (road services). MR. C. F. HARRISON, divisional superintendent, north-east division, central road services, has retired. A New Zealander, Mr. Harrison joined the Underground Electric RailwayS Co. of London, Ltd., in 1924. In 1951 he advised upon the reorganization of transport rvices in Baghdad. MR. M. J. McCoy has been appointed divisional superintendent, . north-east division. He joined A.E.C., Ltd., in 1923 and later worked in New York. In 1930 he joined Green Line Coaches, . Ltd., as a fitter.

MR. C. K. HAamsTY has been appointed traffic manager of Harrogate Co-operative Society.

MR. J. H. NEILL, director of James Neill and Co. (Sheffield), Ltd., makers of Eclipse hacksaw blades and tools, is surveying the Indian and Pakistani markets.

MR. D. M. THOMAS has been appointed manager of the new office at Exchange Buildings, Swansea, of Silver Roadways, Ltd. He was formerly depot superintendent, British Road Services, Llanelly.

MR, F. A. POPE has succeeded MR. J. C. BURTON as chairman of the John Bull Rubber Co., Ltd. Mr. Pope is a part-time member of the British Transport Commission. Mr. Burton, who founded the company, has become honorary president.

SIR CYRIL MUSGRAVE has been appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Supply, with ,effect from July 2, in succession to SIR JAMES HELMORE, who is taking up a business appointment. Sir Cyril's present post of Second Permanent Secretary will be converted into one of deputy secretary and filled by MR. PETER HUMPHREYSDAVIES.

M. P. W. LITCHFIELD, chairman of the American Goodyear concern, has relinquished his responsibilities as chief executive but will continue as chairman. MR. E. J. THOMAS has become chief officer of the company. In 1935 he was appointed managing director of the British Goodyear company, but returned in 1936 to become a vicepresident, He was elected president of the organizaton in 1940. MR. C. STEWART has been appointed assistant manager of the Eire division of the British concern.

SIR WILLIAM RocrrEs, chairman of the Rootes Group, has gone to America to attend conferences in his capacity as chairman of the Dollar Exports Council, and to launch a British sales drive at the New York Motor Show next week. He will be followed by SIR CHARLES HAMBRO, chairman of the Harnbro Trading Corporation, which exports B.M.C. vehicles to America, SIR WILLIAM LYONS, chairman of Jaguar Cars, Ltd., MR. DAVID BROWN, chairman of the Aston Martin and Lagonda companies, and •MR. JACK SCOTT, a director of Rolls-Royce and Bentley.

£280m. IN FUEL TAX

DURING the financial year just ended, road transport paid £280m. in fuel duty--£226m. on petrol and £54m. on oil fuel. The total yield in tax on hydrocarbon oils of all kinds was about £325m.

This year, road transport is expected to find over £290m. out of duties on fuel totalling £340m.
