HEARING of the application by the Western S.M.T. Co., Ltd., to re-route three services in Ayr, was resumed before the Scottish Licensing Authority, last week. As reported in "The Commercial Motor" on March 16, A.A. Motor Services, Ltd., challenged the Western S.M.T.'s right to benefit from the Id. protective fare imposed on long-distance services which overlapped local routes.

At the hearing last week, the Authority suggested that if A.A. Motor Services, Ltd., thought that it had a case in the Id. protective fare, it should apply for a variation of its licences covering the routes concerned.

The hearing was adjourned and will be resumed when a passenger census has been taken, and A.A. Motor Services, Ltd., has submitted an application for licence variation.

NEW TOWN'S CLEANSING EXPANSION

THE town of Leyland is scheduled for development as a new town to take the overspill of population from Preston, Wigan and Salford, In a paper read last Friday to the northwestern centre of the Institute of Public Cleansing, at its annual meeting, Mr. H. Cheetham, cleansing superintendent and sanitary inspector of the urban district council, made proposals for expanded hygiene services.

When the township was completed. he said, the population would be 60.000. The council's depots would be removed and a long-term policy should be made to provide a site in the industrial zone for the provision of a modern refuse utilization plant. The controlled tips should be provided with mechanized equipment for levelling. A mechanical street-sweeper and a gully-emptier should also be obtained,

SALFORD CELEBRATES JUBILEE

AA JUBILEE exhibition to celebrate the completion of 50 years' operation by Salford Transport Department was held last week at Broughton, Salford, at which modern buses and many other features of interest were on show.

The beginnings of street transport in the area go back to 1824. and tramway operation to 1886, but the system was not purchased by the corporation until 1901. Motorbuses were first used in 1920 and have been employed exclusively since 1947, the current annual bus mileage being in excess of 10m.
