Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SHETLAND bus company realised it had done the wrong thing when it got the goahead to raise the fare on one of its routes. So it re-applied to the Traffic Commissioners to drop the 5p increase on the Hamnavoe Scalloway route after it had operated for only a couple of days.

Sanction for the surprise move is revealed in the latest issue of the Commissioners' Notices and Proceedings bulletin. Explaining the unusual situation, a partner in the Scalloway firm of Georgeson & Moore, Mr Alan Young, said the fact that 95 per cent of those using the HamnavoeScalloway service continued their journey to Lerwick had been overlooked.

If the Hamnavoe service increase had stood, Hamnavoe passengers would have had to pay an extra 10p for the journey to Lerwick. This was because the Scalloway-Lerwick fare had been upped by 5p— and this increase was staying in force. "We thought the double increase was going to be too much for our Hamnavoe passengers, so we decided to take the fare down to 10p again. It was really lack of thought on our part. When we put in our first application for the Hamnavoe increase we were in a bit of a rush—we really did not think too much about it."

STRATHCLYDE Regional Council is to ask the Government to wipe out the £2.38m deficit which the Greater Glasgow PTE inherited from Glasgow Corporation.
