STATION CHARGES INQUIRY: PROCEEDINGS INVALID

AN inquiry into charges made by Morpeth Town Council for the use of its bus station was recently abandoned, because Mr, S. W. Nelson, the Northern Licensing Authority for Public Service Vehicles, held that the proceedings were invalid.

Mr, C N. Wardlow, for the Northern Road Transport Owners' Association, said that, by virtue of an Order under Section 90 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, certain small bus operators had made an application -concernlog the council's charges. The operators contended that the charges were unreasonable, and comparative figures for other areas were submitted. It was contended that an Order obtained by Morpeth Town Council under Section 90 was not now in force.

Morpeth's town clerk stated that the council relied on an arrangement made in 1939 at a conference attended by the late Sir John Maxwell (then chairman of the Traffic Commissioners) and the Chief Constable of Northumberland. The parties concerned had since worked to that arrangement.

Mr. Nelson decided that the inquiry could not be held under the Order, and the proceedings were closed.
