QUICK STARTING FOR FIREENGINES.

Caldwell electric water heaters for quick starting have been installed on 11 of Manchester Corporation's fireengines. The apparatus consists of a 1-kw. immersion heater (blade type) fixed horizontally in a cast-iron water container (12 ins. by 2* ins.), the latter being permanently fixed to the chassis and connected by pipes to the engine water jacket. The heater is continually in circuit, but no thermostat is fitted, as the heat losses from the radiator are sufficient to prevent the water temperature from rising unduly. An average temperature of 100 degrees F. is maintained.

Council Granted Dispensation.

• For an experimental period of three months from October 1, the Metropolitan Licensing Authority has granted Hammersmith Borough Council dispensation from the observance of the requirements specified under the headings "journeys " and "goods carried," in Section 2 of the forms in the schedule to the Goods Vehicles (Keeping of Records) Provisional Regulations. 1934.

Johannesburg's Double-decker Choke.

Leyland Motors, Ltd., has received an order from the Johannesburg authorities for 18 double-deck buses equipped with the company's hydraulic transmission. All the vehicles will be equipped with oil engines, and with the exception of one bus—a Titanic six-wheeler—all will be of the Titan type.

Centralization for East Ham?

A joint sub-committee of East Ham Corporation recommends that plans be prepared for the erection, on the sewage works site, of a central garage and repair shop, to accommodate all the petrol and electric vehicles used by the buildings, highways and cleansing departments.

Better Bridges in Brecon.

Breconshire Main Roads Committee Is to embark upon a bridge-reconstruction scheme. It is understood that the improvement of Irfon Bridge, Builth Wells, will at once be commenced.

Heywood Bus Profit.

The year's accounts of the borough of Heywood show that a profit of 41,725 was made on the operation of the buses, whilst the tramways undertaking lost 42,455.

Hyde Corporation has appointed a sub-committee to consider questions in connection with the work and cost cf municipal transport by horses and motors.
