• A Government spokesman has turned down the suggestion that Sunday restrictions should be placed on heavy Continental vehicles in this country.
The idea came from Lord Mancroft. who pointed out that this was the German practice, and could be considered as part of the regulations to control the use of foreign vehicles on Britain's roads.
But Lord Sandford, Under-Secretary DoE, replied that the object of the Foreign Vehicles Bill was to remove certain practical difficulties which prevented effective enforcement of our traffic laws in relation to foreign vehicles.
It would in no way seek to alter those laws which were applicable, without discrimination, to all commercial vehicles. whether British or foreign. British heavy goods vehicles could be used without restriction on Sundays and discrimination against foreign vehicles of this type would be undesirable.
