DOUBLE DECKERS for animal transport area commonplace amongst hauliers 'engaged in cattlecarrying, but it is something of a rarity to find a vehicle of this type with three decks. However, such a cattle truck, based on a standard Austin 3-ton long-wheelbase chassis, has recently been supplied to a Bass Lake operator, the special body with 'which it is equipped having been built by Messrs. Armstron,gs, of Carlisle,. Who are the chassis maker's dealers in the district. s The three decks have a length of 15 ft. and a width of 7 ft. 2 ins., the headroom between them being 3 ft. Each deck is provided with two dividing gates, and the top side rails are detachable, so that they can be folded flat on to the roof. Side inspection doors are provided for each deck and there' is a separate compartment above the driver's cab in which loose equipnient can be housed.

The cattle container, which includes the extension above the cab, is a selfcontained unit, complete with floor, and when it is removed bodily a flatplatform body is left, with which detachable two-piece sides can be used for general-haulage duties.

The chief approximate wtights of the vehicle are as follow : —With a flat plat , A18 form, 2 tons 10 cwt.; with container and second deck, 3 tons 9 cwt.; with container, third deck and all necessary equipment, 3 tons 16 cwt.

When the three decks are in use, approximately 150 store lambs can be carried, such a load being equal to the capacity of three rail wagons. When the second deck is removed as many as 15 or 16 stirks can be accommodated..
