The use of old railway sleepers as the source of charcoal for gas-producer vehicles, was advocated in a paper read at the recent International Carburant Congress, in Rome, by M. Guillaume, of Paris. He stated that about 5,000,000 wood sleepers are annually replaced by new ones on the railways in France, representing about 300,000 tons of hard creosoted wood of little value.

The Laffiy Co., of Asnieres, France, has recently supplied Paris Fire Brigade with a 10-ton chassis carrying a turntable folding fire-escape capable Of being extended to a height of 147 ft.

165 Vehicles Weighed.

During the past quarter, Warwickshire County Coinicil officials checked the -weights of 165 heavy vehicles; 63 of the machines were found to be overloaded and in 43 cases cautions were given. Proceedings were taken in 20 cases, resulting in fines and costs of

Protection against weather for fire. brigade crews has been _carried a step farther by Stirling Town Council. Its new limousine fire-engine, now under construction at the Leyland works, is to have a Clayton heater installed in the body. The machine is a light-type appliance with a 500-700 g.p.m. pump and it will be equipped for towing the brigade's 18-cwt. trailer pump.
