Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"A driver's wife" (CM March 12) has no need to envy me about access to MPs, because wherever she lives her own MP will make himself available through surgeries for constituents to put their grievances to him or her.

I did not discuss television programmes with MPs at Westminster. I mentioned a particular programme in my opening address to emphasise a point about drivers' attitudes towards their jobs. Perhaps if this lady had read the report fully, she would find that her points rather forcibly put on March 12 were covered in general by myself in February when at Westminster.

If her husband is a competent driver, he should not remain where he is if he is only receiving wages at a level mentioned by his wife in her letter. There are plenty of jobs in Middlesex where a driver does not have to break the law to make a decent wage. In fact, my own job, which is in this county, is the reverse. If we exceed the hours' limits, we are in trouble from the Company. I had jobs in the past with conditions about which she complains, but I "shopped around " till I found my present employer and joined a union. It has been my experience that good companies to drive for and union membership go together.

C. W. BURROWS, Lorry Driver of the Year.
