WHEN United Automobile Services, rtf Ltd., applied last week for permission to operate stage services in placeof rail facilities suspended bY the closing of the Hawes-Northaltertort line, North Riding County Council objected that there would be inadequate provision for schoolchildren travelling between Bedale, Leyb urn and Askrigg.
Mr. W. R. Hargrave, for U.A.S., said it would cost them £2,500 a year to provide the services, which would be used by only 46 children.
Mr. A. E. Beckett, for the county council, argued that • the company should operate the services, even at a loss. The council paid 123,000 a year to the applicants for schoolchildren's travel. It would cost the council £500 a year to provide the special facilities. IL: suggested that as the British Transport Commission owned U.A.S. their loss on providing the services should be balanced against the Conimission's saving of £14,000 a year on closing the railway line.
