SIMMS MOTOR UNITS' PROFIT SHOWS GOOD INCREASE

IN 1941, Simms Motor Units, Ltd.,

made a net profit of £53,374 (after providing £34,500 for taxation), compared with £32,179 for 1940. The dividend on the ordinary shares is raised • from 6 to 8 per cent., . and £19,048 is to be carried forward, as against £16,762 brought in.

ALTERNATIVE FUELS. IN SHORT SUPPLY,

I N the House. of Commons recently Mr. Groves asked the Parliamentary. Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether, in view of the handicap upon many activities of national importance, such as those of doctors, likely to be caused by the contemplated curtailment-of petrol sup-, plies, consideration had been given to alternative motor fuels—in particular methane.

Full consideration, answered Mr. Noel-I3aker, was being given to the possibilities of utilizing alternative fuels in road vehicles. The recently announced Government scheme for the development of producer.:gas was one of the methods to be adopted for reducing the consumption of imported liquid fuel, whilst other alternatives, including the use of coal-gas, methane and electricity, were being examined.

It should, however, be borne in mind that these alternative fuels, or their sources, were all in short supply. The ansount of methane which could readily be made available for use was small, and there were difficulties in regard to distribution.

SCOTTISH APPEAL FOR BUS SPARES TRANSPORT authorities in Scotland I are appealing to the Ministry of Transport for spare parts for, buses which are` out of service awaiting repairs. One concern in the West of Scotland, it is understood, 'could put more than SO buses back into service if spare parts be available.

Some works which have completed their war-wtrk programme should, it is suggested in some quarters, be adapted for the making of spare parts.

GOOD TRADING OF EAST LONDON RUBBER CO.

NET profit of the East London Rubber Co., Ltd., in the year'ended February 28 last was £110,195 (contrasted with £74,796 a year earlier), to which has to be added £4,004 as a dividend from a subsidiary. Taxation reserve receives £78,000, reserve for war damage premiums £81,000, and staff fund £3,000. A dividend of ' 7i per cent. is to be paid on the ordinary shares. The amount to be carried forward is £28,039.

DECISIONS ON NATIONAL HAULAGE POOL RATES

'THERE appears to be an impression 1 in certain circles that haulage rates for the different areas of the IIauliers National Traffic, Pool are fixed by the area committees. This is not the case. The M. of W.T. is the' final arbiter and the rates are decided by the Ministry following consultations with the local committees. This applies to all rates for carriers and charges to customers.

HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS . MAINTAINS PROFIT

TN respect of 1941 W. T. Henley's 'Telegraph Works Co., Ltd., is to pay a final dividend of 10 per cent. (less tax) on the ordinary stock, making 15 per cent, for the year; a cash bonus. of 5 per cent. (less tax) is also to be paid. The net profit for the year, after making provision for special war expenditure and all taxation, was • £326,380 (in 1940 it was £320,565), of which £50,000 is transferred to the war contingency account. The amount to be carried forward is £331,276, compared with £382,396 brought in.
