DLEADING guilty to using a lorry

for hire or reward without an A licence, John Thomas Wilberforce, Ganstead Lane, Bilton, Yorkshire, was fined £25 by Goole magistrates. He was ordered to pay £4 18s. costs.

Prosecuting for the Licensing Authority, Mr. E. Wurzal said that if Wilberforce had not admitted the offence, evidence could have been called which would have shown that he had been systematically breaking the law.

The man had used a lorry which was not licensed for haulage to carry a load of timber from Hull to Walsall, said Mr. Wurzal. The return journey was made with a load of pig-iron, and the offence was discovered when the vehicle was stopped at Goole. When interviewed by the police, Wilberforce said: "I can tell you of four firms who are doing just the same thing."

In 1952, Mr. Wurzal went, on, Wilberforce was fined a total of £40, with £37 costs, for six similar .offences at Leeds. The following year he. was fined at Goole for the same thing. Wilberforce told the court that he understood any lorry could be used to carry goods for hire or reward during the fuel shortage.
