29,400 more goods vehicles came into service. They brought the total to 957,500, compared with 928,100 a year earlier.
These figures are contained in "Mechanically Propelled Road Vehicles (Great Britain), Return No. 163," published by the Stationery Office at 4s.
The following are the totals of goods vehicles of various types in use on August 31, 1953, corresponding figures for 1952 being given in brackets:—Electric, 18,300 (17,700); steam and gas, 100 (100); farmers', 42,500 (44,600); local authorities' watering, 2,000 (1,600); others, 891,000 (860,400).
Hackneys declined from 134,600 to 117,800, largely as a result of a big decrease in taxis. The number of hackneys, other than trams, with more than eight seats, fell by 100 to 79,000. Tractors increased in number from 303.300 to 324,000.
