THOUSANDS of buses operated in Greece are to be replaced by new vehicles, and it is thought that many orders will be placed with the Swedish manufacturers, Scania-Vabis. At present. Scania-Vabis are completing delivery of 450 buses to a combine in Athens.
The Athens municipality operate trams, trolleybuscs and oil-engined buses, and they are planning to replace all these with new vehicles. In the Greek provinces. more than 3.000 buses run by private concerns are also to be replaced.
NEW MERSE1 BRIDGE
WORK is about to start on a new YV bridge over the Mersey at Stretford. Associated road works will follow in a few months. Part of a £300,000 scheme to modernize a mile-long section of the Swansea-Manchester trunk road (A57), the improvements will begin near Dane Road, Sale, and extend northward to the junction of Barton Road and Chester Road in Stretford.
A roundabout is to be constructed at the junction of the trunk road with the Stretford-Eccles by-pass, on which work is now proceeding. Two 36-ft. carriageways will replace the existing single 33-ft. road. At present, peak-period traffic is 2,600 vehicles per hour.
DEPUTATION'S NEW DATE
THE deputation from road transport organizations on the question of fuel and chassis tax will now go to the Treasury next Tuesday. They had planned to go last Monday (The Commercial Motor, last week).
