MAN has told the Financial Times that it would consider a merger with another truck company. Chairman Rudolf Rupprecht said that a merger was a "reasonable option" but it was interested only in a deal that would consolidate the firm's "leadership position" in the industry—the three most likely options are tie-ups with Nem or Renault VI, or a takeover by Volkswagen.
MAN is highly profitable and keen to remain independent. but investors are aware that the Volvo/Scania merger has made smaller truck companies more vulnerable—MAN's shares have risen sharply in price over the last couple of weeks,
