CHEAP DIESEL

I take exception to the statement in CM29 July-4 August "Dobbs also uses paraffin on the Continent, as do most international hauliers". People outside this industry might start thinking why are we complaining about diesel prices?

I have been driving to the Continent as an operator for 18 years and employed by others for 12 years. While I admit the practice goes on, I have never used illegal diesel and to the best of my knowledge nor have any of my associates. Maybe this is why we are disadvantaged?

It would seem then, from the comments made by the Deputy IC, that provided you admit what you have done and have enough money stashed away (presumably from the cheap diesel) to pay the fines that your good repute stands? No wonder we're in the state we're in!

STRONG SUPPORT

Your piece 'Norris faces pressure to quit RHA"(CM12-18 August) quoted me in a way which implied that I was keen to see Steven Norris move on. Can I make it clear that not only do I believe he has done a tremendous job in raising the profile of the Road Haulage Association over the past two years or so, he has also highlighted the problems of our industry to Government and the media in a way which was simply not happening before. I also continue to have every personal confidence in him as director general.

I am sure you will find that this is the overwhelming view of other RHA members too— certainly among the ones I talk to. Steven Norris has made it perfectly clear that there is no current conflict of interest in his being on the fist of potential Conservative candidates for London Mayor, and that if that situation changes he will take whatever action is appropriate. I would not expect less of him. Robert C Mckinnon, James McKinnon Jr (Haulage), Kilmarnock.

NO REPLY

I am a farmer who needs transport for grain and straw. I erdoyed the common sense in Gavin McArdle's letter ( CM5-11 August). I noted that it had been sent to the Sunday Express and look forward to reading it again, with some intelligent comment.

Then I was astounded to see that advertising had occupied two pages where more space had been allocated to white space than advertising material and asked why my e-mail had not been published. Not having received an acknowledgement or a reply from the Express Newsgroup, I have cancelled all publications from them.
