• An liGV driver was trapped in the boot of a car for six hours last Saturday after being forced from his vehicle at gunpoint by hijackers posing as police.

The driver, who works for an Ayrshire-based haulier, stopped his Scania artic at 15:00hrs on the northbound hard shoulder of the M6 after seeing a car with blue flashing lights tailing him.

Three men then approached the vehicle—all were dressed in black trousers and white shirts, and were wearing gold-rimmed sunglasses. The driver was threatened with a handgun and bundled into the rear footwell of a grey hatchback.

ver was locked in the boot. Meanwhile, the Scania, which was carrying a consignment of Compaq 140 laptop computers valued at around £1m, was driven off by one of the hijackers.

The driver was released unharmed by a fourth man at 21:20hrs on the B4100 near Gaydon, Warwickshire, 100 miles from where he was abducted; the empty truck was found on Sunday at the M40 Oxford services at Waterstock.

A Cheshire Police spokesman says: "This sort of incident is rare, and is viewed seriously." Cheshire Police's specialist robbery unit is working with Thames Valley and Warwickshire forces on the case. One of the men is described as white, middle-aged, of heavy build and with short hair. The second is 5ft Bin, stocky, black, bald, and with a southern accent. The third is white and stocky and the fourth is white, aged 30, slim with short dark hair.
