Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Foden is following the lead of Seddon Atkinson by fitting the most powerful Perkins Phaser engine, the new 210Ti, to its recently announced 17tonner, the 2000 Series.

This truck has been introduced with the Cummins B Series diesel rated at 134kW (180hp), so the Perkins 210Ti, which should join the line-up later this year, will satisfy the growing demand for more powerful 17-tonners from operators undertaking high-speed inter-urban work.

The charge-cooled Phaser 210Ti produces a generous 156kW (210hp) at 2,500rpm, backed up by 690Nm (510Ibft) at 1,400rpm, and is claimed by Perkins to offer class-leading fuel economy.

So far, only Seddon Atkinson and Dennis have adopted the 210Ti, so Foden's choice could seem surprising given that Cummins now offers a B Series engine rated at a similar 156kW (210hp) (CM 12-18 April), as well as the C Series, producing 157kW (211hp), used by ERF and Iveco Ford. It is consistent, however, with Foden's policy of offering more than one engine choice.

The Perkins engine is likely to be teamed up with the popular nine-speed Eaton 6109 gearbox, which is already an option with the Cumminsengined Foden.

Production of the 2000 Series is slowly getting under way, with the first vehicles on sale in the coming months. ID The centrepiece at Foden's Tipcon stand will be a new 2000 Series 17-tonne tipper in the livery of North Riding Garages.

Foden will also show the 4,000th Foden 4000 Series — a 6x4 tipper in the livery of Smith 8.E Sons of Bletchington.
