WE record with deep regret the death ItV of Sir John Edward Thornycroft, resident of John 1. Thornycroft and Ltd. He was 88. The eider son of he founder, Sir John became managing Iirector of the business when it was nade a public company in 1901. He laid the positions of chairman and ;overning director for many years until tis resignation last July, when he was nade president.

From 1895 onwards he took an active )art at his father's side in the management )f the Chiswick Ship Yard, then engaged n the construction of steam torpedo )oats and other high-speed craft. )ttring the First World War, he took a eading part in the development of coastal notor torpedo boats, depth-charge hrowers and many other devices for sea varfare.
