EXPERIMENTS carried out by th Rockwell-Standard Corporation tram mission and axle division, Detroi Michigan, U.S.A. — manufacturers c Timken-Detroit axles—have shown the an SA.E. 140 lubricant is superior to a S.A.E. 90 oil in preventing rear-axle gea wear and that in many cases wear prat lems have been overcome merely b changing from an S.A.E.. 90 to an 140 lubricant.
These findings were revealed in a pape read to the Society of Automotiv Engineers recently by Mr. W. A. Johnso of the Rockwell-Standard Corporatior who suggested that, rather than seek common lubricant for a commercial vehicle gearbox and rear axle, economic made it preferable to use lubricant " tailored " to each component.
Field tests had shown that—with spiral and hypoid-bevel gearing—S.A.E. 14 oils tended to run slightly cooler thai S.A.E. 90 oils, so the Rockwell-Standan engineers were satisfied that the dynarni viscosity of the S.A.E. 140 oil was highe than that of the S.A.E. 90.
