I-1 A N examination of the present trans
port situation between Britain and Northern Ireland is to be made by Mr. Ernest Marples, Minister of Transport, who is to visit Belfast on December 5. Mr. Peter Thorneycroft, Minister of Aviation, is also to travel to Ulster. As a result of representation from members of the Northern Ireland Government, discussions are to be held on a number of topics associated with cross-channel transport.
Northern Ireland industrialists are seeking to ease the burden of heavy freight charges between their area and Great Britain. In view of the high proportion that the transport element forms in goods sent cross-channel from Northern Ireland, more economical methods of transit are being sought by the Ulster manufacturers. In view of the various moves contemplated, the possibility of changes in the related road transport set-up on the British side of the Irish Sea must not be overlooked.
