Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Hundreds of in-house and contract drivers could lose their jobs as Safeways' parent Argyll carries out a massive review of its distribution operations.

Argyll confirmed this week that 1,000 jobs will go "across the board" but is not saying how many drivers' jobs are threatened by the Safeway's 2000 review programme.

Around 80% of its distribution is contracted out, largely to Exel Logistics (which carries frozen food from its Heathrow depot), Christian Salvesen and Wincanton.

Wincanton's Bathgate depot is thought to be under threat, along with the in-house depot at Felling. Newcastle upon Tyne.

Company sources believe that 179 transport jobs at Felling are threatened by the enlarged Stockton depot nearby.

Argyll has closed its Wakefield and Welwyn Garden City depots over the past year with the loss of around 140 transport jobs.
