Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE BRIGHTEST and the best vehicle liveries are in colour in next week's issue, with the results of the first section of this year's CM International Livery Competition. Will you agree with the judges' decisions?

One company that does sport an effective livery is the airline British Caledonian. In addition to its aircraft B. Cal also has its own small haulage fleet and we have visited Gatwick to look at the role of the lorries among the jet-set.

• What a waste! Up on the west coast of Scotland at Ayr the Institute of Wastes Management has been holding its annual conference and exhibition this week. We take a pictorial look at the waste disposal world of domestic refuse vehicles, mobile compactors and the like.

• Bedford, Ford and Dodge — each one of these major chassis manufacturers cultivates the municipal market, and with local authority budgets on a tight rein individual orders are being hard fought. Bill Brock and Tim Blakemore talk to these manufacturers and to specialist vehicle builders Shelvoke and Drewry, Hestair Dennis and Johnstone Bros. All of them have interesting developments to talk about, which they think will enable them to continue to compete on equal terms.

• To contract-out or not to contract-out — that is the question. Faced with high eages and restrictive practices, many local authorities are turning to the private sector in an effort to cut their refuse costs.

Mike Rutherford has been looking at what authorities have opted for contracting-out and looks at some of the problems they have faced so far. In Wandsworth, for instance, private contractors have provided a cheaper service — but the workforce is far from happy. Read next week's issue to find out why.
