Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE FORTH ROAD Bridge will have to be reduced to a single lane in each direction for up to two months while essential repairs are carried out, the bridge's managers warned this week.

Until now most repairs have been carried out at the weekend, when there is less traffic, but the need to work on worn-out joints means closing lanes for anything from two weeks to two months.

The repairs will be carried out in two years' time, just as the new Kincardine Bridge opens. The Forth Road Estuary Authority is asking for the old Kincardine Bridge to be kept open for a little longer to ease the pressure of traffic attempting to cross the Forth.

A spokesman explains: We would normally do repairs at the weekend, but in this case we have to take up the carriageway. Basically, we have to take the bridge to bits so we have no choice but to close lanes until the repairs are completed."
