Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Lifting and retractable axles are to be covered by the Construction and Use regulations.

Controls will be introduced on the use of manually and automatically-retractable axles to avoid the overload of remaining axles. Operating an axle lift from within the cab will be banned, but exceptions will include provision for increasing traction for short periods.

It is also proposed to rede fine overhang, disregarding the inclusion of retractable axles where fitted in the rearmost position; and to regard selftracking axles in the same manner as steering axles.

The revisions are scheduled for 1 January 1991: comments should be sent to N H Girling, Room C19115, Department of Transport, 2 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3EB. The closing date is 2 March.
