officials from the Continent could soon be helping to enforce road transport regulations on UK roads.
The EC Karolus programme aims to exchange about 1,900 national civil servants between EC member states. They will be used to enforce a range of EC single market legislation.
The list includes "road transport and in particular officials with responsibility for the implementation and effective application of regulations, expecially on employment conditions and technical matters"—which translates as drivers hours, mechanical fitness and overloading.
The EC has again challenged the £100m programme which the Italian Government has launched to help its haulage industry. Italy wants to provide hauliers with tax exemptions for mergers; grants for vehicles and relief from some social security charges.
