Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Philips of Eindhoven, Holland, are to show a bus fitted with a four-cylinder version of the Stirling engine at the Brussels Show next month. An experimental unit developing 200 bhp at 1400 rpm was referred to in CM on April 5 1968, installed in an experimental bus. The output of the engine in the DAF chassis expected at Brussels will be 180 bhp.

Work on the Stirling has been carried out by Philips since 1938 and licence agreements exist between the company and GMC of America and MAN of Germany. The Stirling is a hot-air engine with external combustion, using hydrogen or helium as a working medium in a closed cycle. It is noted for very low toxicity of exhaust.
