THE possibility that the Geddes Committee will have reported, and Government transport intentions clarified, by the time that the Traders Road Transport Association Conference is held in April has been taken into account by the Association in planning the subjects to be dealt with. The first business session, on Thursday, April 29, will therefore be devoted to a review of transport developments with particular reference to ownaccount operations, but the precise nature of the content and the identity of the main speaker have been left open.

The two other papers to be given on the same day have been decided, the first of these being on the maintenance and design of goods vehicles, by Mr. Hubert Perring, chief mechanical engineer, Ministry of Transport. The second will be given by Mr. H. M. Floyd, deputy group traffic manager of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, who will talk on "The goods vehicle driver, with particular reference to engagement, training, the reintroduction of the heavy goods vehicle driving licence, arid the image drivers project on behalf of the individual firm and the industry ". Mr. Floyd. who is one of the Association's national vicechairmen, will cover the subect very

n8 widely and by the time of the conference the Industrial Training Act may well have a direct hearing on his talk, On the next day, Friday, Mr. P. F. Stott,. who has recently been appointed director of highways and transportation of the Greater London Council, will talk about the problems of traffic, with particular reference to the position of 'the goods vehicle. He is expected to survey the practical implications of such things as road pricing, the sharing of restricted road space. and some of the main topics covered by the Buchanan Report_ Following this there will be a brains trust of experts who will answer questions on all aspects of road transport, and the president will give his closing address.

The conference will be slightly longer than the first of the series at Brighton in 1963, opening with an informal reception on the evening of Wednesday, April 28, and closing with a banquet on the Friday night, Each paper or address will be followed by a discussion period, thus reducing the pressure on time which was evident at Brighton,

The business sessions will be accompanied by a full social programme. Application forms are available from T.R..T.A. headquarters.
