YORKS GETS STARTED ON RATES TASK.

The Council of the Federation of Yorkshire Road Transport Employers has set up two committees to consider questions relating to the stabilization of rates for the carriage of goods—a long-distance rates committee and a short-distance rates committee. In considering stabilization, they will have regard to the deliberations of the Yorkshire Regional Committee of road and rail representatives, on which the Federation is represented by its secretary, Mr. Harry Clark, and no -doubt they will formulate suggestions for submission to that body.

The members of the Federation's long-distance rates committee are:— Messrs. R. Barr (president of the Federation), H. H. Beaumont, A. C. Bell, P. Barrick, W. Grainger, H. Richards and W. Studer. The shortdistance rates committee is composed of Mr. Barr and Messrs. W. Aldon, A. T. Brooke, G. E. Gilbey, H. Lund and A. Walker.

Bigger Scope in Manchester's Parade.

Three changes from the usual programme at the annual vehicle parade in .Belle Vue Gardens, Manchester, have been decided on for Saturday, September 23, by the joint committee of organizers representing the Manchester and the South-east Lanes Areas of the C.M.U.A. They are as follow:—

U) The class for steam wagons is dropped; (2) the trophy hitherto given for steamers is transferred to a new section, open to all comers (whether C.M.U.A. members or not) for the best vehicle in the parade; (3) a new class for electric vehicles will appear. The first change obviously infers that steam vehicles are a diminishing quantity, whilst the third is a tribute to the fact that large and increasing numbers of electrics are in use about Lancashire. Full details for competitors are available at the office of Mr. W. Farnorth, C.M.U.A., 28, Queen Street, Manchester.

Good Wage Step by Passenger People.

In many cases passenger-transport workers in Doncaster and district will receive immediate wage-increases of from 2s. to 3s. per week, under an agreement which a large number of individual operators in that area have made in order to stabilize wages and in an effort to conform with Section 93 of the Road Traffic Act of 1930.

The negotiations between the employers concerned have been arranged by Mr. W. J. Lowe, secrestary of the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O., and one of the interesting features has been the desire of non-members to par ticipate in these negotiations. The number of workers involved is approximately 200, including drivers, male conductors and female conductors. The ultimate result of the agreement will be an all-round increase in their general earnings. About 40 to 50 per cent, of the employees will benefit immediately. BIG B.R.F. SHOW AT CHARING CROSS.

An important road exhibition called " From Here to There" will be held by the British Road Federation, through the courtesy of London Passenger Transport Board, in the main booking hall at Charing Cross Underground Station from September 18 to October 5. The object of this exhibition will be to call public, attention to the need for better roads, and it will particularly stress the urgent need for the carrying out of the three great schemes for road improvement which are receiving the support of the Federation. These are the Bressey Report, the County Surveyors' Society's scheme for motorways, and the Alness Report on the Prevention of Road Accidents.

An A.R.O. Banquet Date.

News comes (and truly advance news!) that the annual banquet and ball of A.R.O.'s Metropolitan Area will be held at Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London, W.1, on Monday. February 19, 1940.

Scots Mechanics' Better Bawbee Outlook.

The Scottish Motor Trade Association has recommended all employers to pay the national award of 2s. a week increase for mechanics, with proportionate advances for apprentices. The increase is to be made retrospective to June 5.

The employers' secretary has given assurance that influence will be used to bring all concerns into line. Application has been made to Dundee engineering employers for an increase in the basic rate, to bring the level up to the standard recognized in Edinburgh.

Mr. Harry Luckhurst, Clyde organizer, states that the national award has been observed by all the,non-federated firms.
