• A Lords' demand this week that all buses should be relieved of fuel tax was made by Lord Teviot, who asked for "Action, not mere empty words". All buses—not only stage and special services—should be freed from the fuel tax burden, he said, even from that part which it was claimed represented the value to the operator of the road they ran over.
Replying, Lord Sheppard said that the assistance being given to buses showed the Government's recognition of the essential part the industry played in the provision of national transport facilities. He said that the Minister of Transport would bear in mind all the representations that had been made to him.
