Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Stockport and Blackpool corporations have been granted fares increases by the North Western Traffic Commissioners. Last Friday Stockport applied to introduce new fares on May 4. Mileage allowed for the 3d minimum will be reduced from 0.9 mile to 0.5 mile. The next fare will be 4d, with 2d steps thereafter.

On Monday Blackpool sought to raise the minimum from al to 4d, with additional 1d, 2d or 3d on other fares.

Questioned as to the advisability of retaining its trams the borough treasurer, Mr. W. 0. Jolliffe, said they were kept for more than sentiment. They were retained because of the increased traffic congestion extra buses would create and because of their tourist attraction value.
