FROM OUR INDUSTRIAL CORRESPONDENT

LINER trains will be running before 1–+ the end of the year, the Minister of Transport. Mr. Tom Fraser, forecast this week. His statement, on a visit to inspect the new terminal at GushetfauIds to be used for the first service between Glasgow and London, suggests that the British Railways Board will be given the green light to go ahead with the first stage of the plan whether the railway unions agree to co-operate or not.

The executive of the NUR were expected to have another look at the problem during their current quarterly meeting. Senior union officials are hopeful that they will lift their opposition on the understanding that the joint working party keeps an eye on developments and that the scheme is reviewed. Mr. Fraser certainly seemed confident that there would be a happy ending to the long saga. "I think at the end of the day when the British Railways Board meets all the points of objection which the NUR raise they will not oppose the operation of the service when it gets under way ", he said. "As I see it, it is just a question now of completing work at the terminals, getting the vehicles ready for the job and getting the traffic. I believe that all these things will be achieved within a month or two now and the Freightliners will start running before the end of the year."

Mr. Fraser added that there might be a difficult period when liner trains started running, but he was sure they would get Through it.
