Bedford Company Make Good Start : List 7 Purchasers Becoming Known

ALARGE first purchase has been reported from the East Midlands this week. Fredk. Ray, Ltd., 25 Cauldwell Street, Bedford, have taken over 22 vehicles (117 tons) from British Road Services. They are based at Grovebury Road Depot, Leighton Buzzard.

Preparing for an expansion in business, when restrictions are eased at the end of the year, Cyprien-Fox, Ltd., a London company who have bought two cx-B.R.S. vehicles, have already opened offices in Manchester and Middles-.

Many repeat successes are revealed in purchases reported from the many areas listed below. The names of successful tenderers for units offered in List 7 are becoming known.

NORTH-WEST Three vehicles and three trailers (24 tons) , bought by Messrs C. E.. Salt and A. German, 6 St: James Place, Liverpool, 8, have been assigned to Garston Haulage Co., Ltd., at the same address. Mr. F. B. Ford, Porlock, Chester Road, Bramhill, who has bought two vehicles (71 tons), has made over one (4-/ tons) to Messrs. S. 1. and G. S. Jeory (P. Jeory and Son), Kenwood, Wood Road, Halewood, and the other 131 tons) to L. Harper, Ltd., 69 Beech Road, Cale Green, Stockport.

-Other assignments revealed in the current issue of Applications and Decisions for the North-West Traffic Area are as follows:— Home Farm (Mawdesley), Ltd. (He,aton's Transport), have made over one vehicle (2i tons) to Mr. H. Calm; Marshes Lane, Mere Brow, Tarleton; Johnstone Bros. (Gilcrux), Ltd., Aspatria, in the Northern Area, have made over a vehicle (2 tons) to Lloyds of Trafford Park. Ltd., Park Garage, Third Avenue, Trafford Park. Manchester; Mr. K. Beresford, Bignall End, Stoke-on-Trent, in the West Midland Area, has assigned two vehicles and two trailers (18i tons) to Mr. W. Lovatt, East Elworth Garage, Etworth, Sandbach, Cheshire; Mr. W. Gill, 16 Forrest Avenue. Buxton, has taken over one vehicle (3 tons) from Mr. L. Gleave (Audlem).

YORKSHIRE Norman Jowett, Ltd., Central Garage, Stansfield Road, Todmorden, who, as reported on August 20, have Made substantial purchases of vehicles from the British Transport Commission, have assigned four to Max Robinson (Transport). Ltd., 419 Corn Exchange Buildings, Manchester, 4. A vehicle acquired by J. W. Preston, • Ltd., Woodmand House, New Lane, Laisterdyke. Bradford, has been assigned to W. G. Firby (Transport), Ltd., Woodmand House, New Lane, Laisterdyke. •

WEST MIDLANDS

With the acquisition of a second unit, comprising an articulated outfit (3 tons), Messrs. G. and H. Brewster (Brewster Bros.), 16 Woseley Road, Bilston, now have four vehicles running under special A licences. Their first purchase comprised Maudslay, Foden and Bedford lorries, and the latest acquisition is a Seddon tractor. Brewster Bros. escaped nationalization and have been doing contract work for the iron and. steel industries.A general service will be offered with their ex-B.R.S. vehicles. Special A licences have also been granted

by the West Midland Licensing Authority to the following: —Webh Bros. (Contractors, Bilston), Ltd., Wolverhampton Street, Bilston, for three vehicles (18I tons); /Vfountford Bros. (Haulage Contractors), Ltd., 266 Werrington Road, Bucknall, two articulated outfits (41 tons); W. Bengry and Sons, Ltd., Longmoor Garage, Kingsland, one articulated outfit (3* tons); and Messrs. C. and L. Gordon, 29 Gower Street, Langton, one vehicle (71 tons), assigned by Mr. K. Beresford, Bignall End, Stoke-on-Trent.

EAST MIDLANDS A substantial first purchase has been made by Fredk. Ray, Ltd., 25 Cauld well Street, Bedford. They have acquired 22 vehicles (117 tons), based at Leighton Buzzard.

Road stone will he carried in the two Bedford 5-tonners and a Commer 7-tonner. purchased by "Royal Blue" Coach and Transport Co., Ltd., The Garage, Pytehley, near Kettering They will operate in the Midlands.

Four vehicles and a container (15 tons 12 cwt.) have been purchased direct from B.R.S, by Mr. W. F. Cooper, Mill

House, Dunham-on-Trent, Newark. In addition, one vehicle (3 tons I cwt.) has been assigned to him by Mrs. Alice Cooper, Dunham-on-Trent. Newark, whose purchase of two vehicles was reported in The Commercial Motor on May 21. Mrs. Cooper has also assigned a vehicle (3 tons 7 cwt.) to Messrs. C. and R. Bradshaw (J. Bradshaw and Sons). White Gates, Sturton-by-Stow, near Lincoln.

Assignments have also been made by R. D. Hamblin, Rectory Road. Rushden, who has purchased four vehicles (13 tons 8 cwt.). Two of these (6 tons 14 cwt,) have gone to Grants Transport Services, Ltd., 41 Milton Street. Higham Ferrers, and two (6; tons) to Messrs. G. W. and C. H. Hine (Hine Bros.), Woodhouse Farm, Discworth.

Mr. A. A. Ancliff, 1 Ramsddn Crescent, North Carlton, Worksop, has purchased a vehicle (3 tons) from Mr. S. A. Marsden, Worksop. Mr. S. A. Arland has made over one vehicle (4 tons 7 cwt.) to the newly formed company of Arrand and Son

(Hauliers), Ltd., North Moor Road, Scotter, near Gainsborough. A Leyland Comet 7-8-ton tipper, it came from the Scunthorpe group of B.R.S. The vehicle bought by Mr. Ancliff is a 1951 Bedford 7-tonner. It is being used on a general service between Worksop and South Wales, a run which was pioneered by Mr. Ancliff's father before his business was nationalized.

Repeat purchases have been made by Moore's Transport (Ashby), Ltd., Nottingham Road, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, of two articulated outfits (9 tons 9 cwt.), and Mr. J. Hancock, 16 Dalby Road, Anstey, of one vehicle (3 tons). New purchasers are Messrs. F. and J. Clarke and E. Timms (A. Clarke and Sons). 23 Foundry Square, Banbury, who have acquired a 1950 Guy Vixen 1,250-cu.-ft. van for their furniture-removal service. Three Wyberton units have gone to Ernest S. Kine and Son, Ltd., Windmill Inn, Old Leakc, near Boston. They arc units 3380, 3381 and 3382, each comprising one vehicle (total 6 tons). They are due to be takover on October 4.

Messrs. Stone and Ogan, Alfreton load, Derby, who have been successful with earlier tenders, are due to take over Hilton unit 3342 on October 5. It comprises a Bedford platform lorry with an unladen weight of 2 tons 11 cwt.

EASTERN COUNTIES

Two units consisting of six vehicles (17 tons) and one spare have been taken over by Mr. J. Tubby, 388 Whapload Road, Lowestoft. The units were 3700 (Bury St. Edmunds) and 4046 (Oulton Broad). Two units have also been bought by Mr. C. F. Harrison, Surflect, Spalding, Lincs. They are Lincoln unit 3995, comprising one vehicle (3 tons), and Wyberton unit 3375, . two vehicles (6 tons).

Mr. G. T. Rickworth, 28 Market Place, Swaffham, Norfolk, has been successful with tenders for three units in List 7. They arc unit 3371 (Cambridge), two vehicles (5; tons); 3372 (Cambridge), one vehicle (21 tons); and 4045 (Dutton Broad), three vehicles, including an articulated outfit (8:l tons).

• Single units have been purchased by Mr. R. C. J. Paradine, Great Easton. • Dunmow. and Mr. A. E. Moule, Silver Street, Ashwell, Baldock. Mr. Paradine's purchase was Bishop's Stortford unit 3367, comprising two vehicles (61 tons). Mr. Monte's, also at Bishop's Stortford, was unit 3369—one vehicle (2,* tons).

WESTERN AREA One of three new purchasers is Mi.

L. A. 0. Walter (East Dorset Transport), Station Road, West Moors, Dorset, who has taken over two Thornycroft lorries with a total unladen weight of 6 tons. They will be used to carry general goods in the West Country. Mr. Walter told The Com

mercial Motor this week that he hopes lo be successful with more tenders, as he plans to operate some 12 vehicles.

Furniture and general goods are being carried on a twice-weekly regular service between Taunton and Birmingham by the two vehicles taken over by W. Fear and Son, Ltd., St. Andrews Road, Taunton. Som. Both are Bedford 4-5-tonners, one being a conventional van and the other a • Luton pantechnicon

Mr. R. H. Ernm (Messrs. R. H, and M. Emm), Broadchalke, Salisbury, Wilts, has bought one vehicle (4 tons 4 cwt.).

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES Messrs. J. Sullivan and C. C. Dwane (J. Sullivan), 38 Great Queen Street, London, W.C.2, have had four vehicles (It tons 17 cwt.) assigned to them by Mr. T. Regan, Chun Farm, Horsmonden, Kent. Based originally at 118 Solebay Street, London. E.3, the lorries are now operating from 255 Cable Street, London, E.1. Mr. T. Reg–an has also assigned three vehicles (9 tons) to G. L. Baker (Transport), Ltd., 104 Long Acre, London, W.C.I.

The four lorries taken over by J. Sullivan are Austin 6-tonners. They will operate mainly in London and the Home Counties.

An oil-engined Albion 8-10-ton platform lorry, purchased by Messrs. R. R. M. and M. M. Mackenzie (Mackenzie Bros.), and assigned to Mackenzie Transport, Ltd., Highbridge Wharf, Eastney Street, London, S.E.10, is to be used on a general service between London and Birmingham, and London and Liverpool.

Another assignment is that of a lorry (21 tons) and a trailer to Double " P " Transport, Ltd., 48a Rochester Place, London, N.W,1, by Mr. A. Greensmith, Sunnysidc, First Avenue, Eastchurch, Isle of Sheppey. The vehicle and trailer are based at 48a Rochester Mace, London, N.W.1.

TWo vehicles (6 tons) have been assigned to Cyprien-Fos, Ltd., Harvest Mews, Homsey Road, London, N.7, by Mr, 3. Costelloe, Oakland Court, Prestbury Road, Cheltenham, who was also mentioned last week. They are Seddon 7-tonners. Cyprien-Fox, Ltd., have placed these in operation on a night trunk service to Manchester, where they have opened an office. They plan to increase this service when restrictions are lifted at the end of the year. In anticipation of this they have already opened an office in Middlesbrough, where they intend to operate a nightly trunk service from January 1.

Wright and Co. (King's Cross), Ltd., 147-155 Caledonian Road. London, N.1, have bought another vehicle (I ton). A new purchaser is Mr. W. Salta, Transport Garage, Stanley Road, London, E.15. He has bought two lorries (7 tons).

The two vehicles, which were reported last week to have been taken over by Osborn Transport Co., Ltd., 52 Lambton Road, London, N.19, are both 5-tonners. This company specialize in carrying pianos between London, Devon, Lancashire and Yorkshire,

The four vehicles also reported last week as having been purchased by Messrs. 0. W. F. and J. H. F. Roberts (J. F. Roberts), are being operated from 62 Wade), Hill, Brentwood, Essex.

The first tender known to have been Successful for a unit in List 7 is that of Mumford Transport, Ltd., Maiden, Kent. Based at Rochester, the unit comprised three Seddon oil-engined 6-tonners. They will be used to carry fruit and agriculture to all parts. It is a repeat purchase. Dual Transport, Ltd., 78 Wordsworth Avenue, Greenford. Middx, have bought four articulated outfits and assigned them to White Bros., Ltd., 31 Hertford Street, London, W.1, Messrs. Clarks of Croydon, 882 London Road. Thornton Heath, have purchased Special Traffics unit 4053 (Wimbledon), comprising a Luton van 13 tons).

Other one-vehicle Special Traffics units have gone to Mr. F. E. Ballard, 70 Crown Road, Twickenham, Middx.; H. Davey and Sons, Ltd.. 13a Steedman Street, London, S.E.17; and Mr. L. Heatley (Thornetts DepositorY), Craven Park Road, London, N.W.10. Mr. Ballard's purchase was unit 4264 (Croydon), consisting of one articulated vehicle (2 tons), Davey's was unit 4041 (Wimbledon), a Luton van (3 tons), and Mr. Heatley's was unit 4933 (Wimbledon), a Luton van (3 tons).
