The drivers, who iver food for Co-op isidiary ACC, are ied at nine depots which have varying rates of pay. A Scottish Class 1 driver currently earns £6.02 an hour for a guaranteed 44-hour week, of which the last five hours are paid at time-and-a-half.

Co-op spokesman Phil Edwards says the joint employer/trade union working party will look at rates of pay and working practices but the main focus will be or the implications of the WTD.

• The Transport & General Workers Union is to press for more than 2,500 oil tanker drivers to be paid during their meal breaks. Ron Webb, TGWU national secretary for road transport, says the claim would be worth around four hours pay a week. "It is a high cost element without question," he says.

Although the issue still needs further scrutiny by union officials, Webb adds: "It will be an item on the claim— there's no doubt about that."

The union's total claim is for an hourly rate of £12 and members have indicated they would be prepared to vote for strike action over the issue.
