Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CLAIMS of trailer and semitrailer non-asbestos brake linings lasting twice as long as conventional, asbestos-based linings are being made by Beral-Bremsbelag, the West German friction material manufacturer.

This contrasts starkly with reports from Tilcon's engineer Sam Dunnico at the ETMC conference in Barcelona (CM, November 17) of non-asbestos linings disintegrating and possibly leading to impaired braking efficiency.

Beral is using Du Pont's Kevlar aramid pulp material as a substitute for asbestos in its linings. Longer service life and reduced drum wear more than offset the higher initial cost of Kevlar linings says the manufacturer.
