Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• If all London's car commuters were to transfer to buses the average journey time for all passengers could be reduced by as much as one-third. This is one of the conclusions from a theoretical estimate made by the Road Research Laboratory.

Calculations have been made of the effect of private transport users in the central area of London transferring to public transport in peak periods. Several alternative systems were investigated all using buses; in one, all passengers used present-type 70 passenger buses and the density of routes was increased to take advantage of the increased bus flow.

Other possibilities investigated were the use of 50-, 30-, 20and 10seater bus systems using many more routes, particularly with the smaller-type vehicles. It was assumed that the flows of taxis and goods vehicles remained at their present levels.

The calculations suggest that any of the systems of buses within the range 20to 70seaters could adequately cope with the present passenger traffic during peak hours. Some, but not all, of the present car drivers would have longer journey times when travelling by bus, but others, as well as all present bus passengers, would have shorter journey times.

Fares could be reduced with some of the systems which could at the same time provide a better service. Economically, the system applied in central London could result in a saving in vehicle-operating costs and passengers' time costs of up to £20m a year.

E. W. A. Butcher has been appointed general manager of the Bristol Omnibus Co. Ltd. and its associated companies with effect from July 1. Mr. Butcher was appointed to the Ribble Motor Services Ltd. as traffic superintendent in 1955 and became traffic manager of that company in January 1965. J. T. E. Robinson. managing director of the Bristol Group of Companies. will continue to act in that capacity.

Sir Donald Stokes, chief executive of British Leyland Motor Corporation has been appointed chairman of Aveling-Barford Ltd., the company taken over by Leyland last year. Edward Barford, present chairman, has resigned this post but will remain on the board.

F. C. Simpkins has been elected chairman of the national council, Institute of Traffic Administration, for 1968. He joined the Institute in 1946 and has been a member of London centre committee since 1957, serving respectively as treasurer/secretary and chairman. He was elected vice-chairman of national council in 1965. Mr. Simpkins is engaged in operations planning with Shell-Mex and BP Ltd.. London, Ray F. Richard has been appointed managing director of Cummins Engine Co. Ltd., in addition to his position as vice-president of the American Cummins parent company. Mr. Richard is now responsible for all Cummins operations in the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia. The announcement follows the company's recent purchase of Chrysler's interest in Chrysler-Cummins Ltd., a joint venture at Darlington, Hereward ("Harry") Palmer, 65, chairman of the Institute of Transport East Midlands section for 1968-9, has retired as distribution manager of Raleigh Industries Ltd. at Nottingham, after almost 22 years with the company. Mr. Palmer was elected chairman of the Nottingham region of the Industrial Transport Association for 1966-7 and 1967-8.

Michael W. A. Norris has been elected chairman of both Smithfield Meat Carriers' Association itself and

of its bulk haulage section. Mr. Norris, who is with Union Cartage Co. Ltd., succeeds E. J. Booth, who declined to stand for re-election. Mr. Booth.

Association chairman for eight years, and general manager of R. Cornell Ltd., said he would be retiring from business in a few months.

Ian Green, 32, has been appointed container sales manager of Crane Fruehauf Trailers Ltd., and is based at the Isleworth head office. Mr.

Green was formerly general sales manager with Thompson Trailmobile where he spent three years after being commercial vehicle sales manager with British West Africa Corporation in Lagos. David Gibling, formerly responsible for container sales, is now divisional general manager at the Crane Fruehauf North Walsham factory.

I. Green P. F. Goodall R. Kirton Peter F. Goodall has been appointed container division sales manager of York Trailer Co. Ltd. The appointment has been made as part of York's container sales department expansion.

Robert Kirton, 38, has been appointed Thoresen Car Ferries freight sales manager. Mr. Kirton has been assistant freight sales manager since joining the company in 1965. His predecessor, John Probert, will be moving to the Bahamas shortly with 0 new company,

E. F. Clarke has been promoted chief engineer of Guy Motors Ltd. As assistant to C. Elliott—now Guy's executive director (engineering)—Mr. Clarke has been jointly responsible for all recent engineering projects, including the Guy Big J range of trucks and tractive units.

J. R. B. Dersley has been appointed assistant engineer of the North Western Road Car Co. Ltd as from June 1 in succession to G. S. Taylor who is now chief engineer of the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co. Ltd. Mr. Dersley has been central area engineer of the Ribble company since 1966.

E. Bruce Knee has been elected by the council of the Institute of the Motor Industry to serve as president for 1968-69. This will be Mr. Knee's third term as president.

J. E. Cooke has been appointed director and chief engineer of Atkinson Vehicles Ltd. Appointed chief engineer in January last year, Mr. Cooke has just returned from a lengthy tour of major automotive and transport companies in Africa, Australia, North America and the Caribbean.

J. P. Soden has been appointed service manager of Daimler Transport Vehicles Ltd. and F. H. Coleman appointed spares manager. These appointments follow the recent retirement of K. L Terry, general service manager.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the death of Harold Fullwood, Percival Charles Howard. and Gerald Maclean.

Mr. Fullwood, president of the National Tyre Distributors' Association in 1938 and from 1941 to 1945, died at his home near Wolverhampton last week after a long illness. He was elected an honorary life member at the a.g.m. in 1965. Mr. Fullwood was the Mayor of Wolverhampton in 1952-3.

Mr. Howard, founder and managing director of the haulage firm of P. C. Howard Ltd.. Kings Cliffe, died at the age of 62. In 1951 he also acquired several buses to operate a passenger service locally. Mr. Maclean, a director of Pickfords Ltd. since 1963, died last week. He joined the firm in 1926. During the Second World War, he served on the staff of the Inspector-General of the RASC and was seconded to the Middle East Supply Lentre as transport officer for Egypt. He returned to Pickfords in 1945 as assistant chief removal and travel manager.
