Comprehensive Drivers' Guide

A LTHOUGH intended primarily for r-1 commercial vehicle drivers, the " Headlight A.B.C." should be an invaluable acquisition for hauliers if only for the comprehensive list of reputable clearing houses that it contains. Drivers will perhaps be more interested in the 1,000 cafes of which details and addresses are given, and in the section dealing with garages and their facilities.

The 88-pagc booklet is good value at 2s. 6d. and would be useful to anyone who travels extensively by road in this country. It can be obtained direct from the publishers, "Headlight," 46 Islington High Street, London, N.1, at 2s. 10d. by post.

Formed Panels particular interest to the smaller bodybuilder are formed panels for drop-side, tailboard and headboard construction offered by E. J. Holmes, Ltd., 113-115 North Street, Rumford, Essex. The panels, which consist basically of 16or 14-gauge sheet aluminium with the edges formed through two .right angles, are like a very shallow three-sided box. On receiving the formed panel, the bodybuilder has merely to rivet .another sheet to it and fit hinges and. other hardware. This saves time and, as it eliminates mitreing, reduces the need for skilled labour. As no framing is used..a reduc tion in weight is possible, whilst a flush surface is obtained on both sides of the finished board. A typical drop-side panel, 7 ft. 6 in. by 1 ft. 7 in. in 16-s.w.g. material, costs £2 18s. 6d.

Automatic Cut-off 0 diaphragm-type pressure-sensitive Fswitches produced by Firth Cleveland Industries, Ltd., Treforest, Glam., are intended for installation in hoppers and similar bulk containers to stop the incoming flow of granular or semi-solid material at a predetermined level.

They could be fitted in the hoppers of bulk-carrying road vehicles to prevent overfilling. The switches are attached to the interior wall of the hopper with the diaphragm facing inwards. When the material being loaded reaches the level of the unit, it presses on the diaphragm to actuate a micro-switch and halt the flow. Models are available for use in open or pressurized containers.

Crane Covered ABOOKLET describing the Rapier 1520 mobile crane, first shown at the recent Mechanical Handling Exhibition, is now available from Ransomes and Rapier, Ltd., Ipswich. The crane, which can be used with strut-type jibs up to 80 ft. long, is very manoeuvrable, with a 43-ft. turning circle.
